What is a Doula?
Doula comes from a Greek word meaning "To Serve". In modern times a doula is a woman who is trained in and provides continuous support and encouragement for a woman during labor.

Why Would I Want to Hire a Doula?
A birth with a doula present is; more likely to be shorter and complications of birth are less likely.
Mothers with a doula report less negative feelings about birth and are also less likely to request pain medication.

When a mother has a doula present, studies show that both parents (or the mother and her partner) feel more secure and cared for, are more successful in adapting to their new roles as parents, have greater self confidence, less postpartum depression, and less incidence of abuse. Unnecessary interventions are also less likely to occur when a mother hires a doula.

Doula's are available to answer questions 24/7 and are on call for your birth. They are available from the start of labor til hours past the time baby is born.

A woman with a doula is also more likely to be successful at breastfeeding her baby.

What Kind of Births can a Doula Attend?
Doula's are available for all births. Ranging from Home births with no medication to high intervention births in a hospital. A doula is there for YOU. She will help in any way she can depending on your birth circumstances.

Can a Doula Perform Medical Tasks?
A doula can not and will not perform medical tasks such as checking the cervix or prescribing medicaiton. However, a doula can provide you with information on alternatives, help you gather your thoughts, and remind you that you have time to think things over. She is there to support you during birth and help you to advocate for yourself.

Can a Doula Speak For the Mother or Other Family Members?
A Doula will not speak for you. She will encourage you to speak up and give you the information you need to be well informed on a variety of different topics.

Will a Doula Make Dad (or other family member) feel left out?
No, a doula is not there to take the place of the dad. Doula's help and encourage dad's, grandma's, and other family members to participate in the births of their babies. Often times, these people are scared to see their loved one going through birth and can't quite "get in the groove" of things. Doula's help to remind everyone that birth is a natural, normal process and that their help is valuable.
